Indiscriminate dumping of mixed and green waste near the Shetye Steel yard, close to the South Goa District Court, again came back to haunt the Margao city fathers and civic officials on Thursday.
Smoke was seen billowing from the site throughout Thursday after the green waste was engulfed by a fire that had started the previous night. Fire personnel have attributed the smoke billowing from the site to the methane gas that must have been generated underneath the site due to reckless waste dumping.
While the Margao Municipal Council had dumped truckloads of “RDF” from Sonsodo during the remediation process, huge logs of firewood were also dumped on the site during the monsoon preparedness drive by the district authorities.
Taking cognisance of the recurring fires and smoke at the site, Margao Municipal officials have considered deploying machinery to level the ground and segregate the firewood for better management. “If required, the site can be capped with silt generated during the pre-monsoon works that will soon begin in the city,” an officer added.
