The Western Ghats runs parallel to India's western coast, approximately 30-50 km inland, The Ghats cover six states of India (States of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra and Gujarat). The recent landslides in Wayanad expose the government failures to tackle its well known ecological vulnerabilities, there were silent screams in Wayanad by the activists and experts of ecological destruction. The unregulated tourism boom has also played a key role in 'ghatastrophe' happening in ' Rome of the east' Goa as lots of mega projects and hill cutting are going on at a fast pace destroying the ecological balance. Governments have no interest in protecting nature . As recommended by the Western Ghats ecology expert panel, Kerala and Goa including four other states should discourage engineering projects in eco -sensitive zones and constitute empowered expert committees to study viable alternative projects. Kerala and Goa should balance developmental needs in consideration of environmental challenges. What took centuries to build,' God's own country' (Kerala) and The 'Rome of the East' ( Goa) , we are ruining them impulsively in the name of development undertaken by all governments.
