As per recent newspaper reports, over Rs 12 crore has been collected by the Transport Department for various traffic offences, such as rash and drunk driving, over-speeding, improper parking, etc, during the years 2020-2023. However, the number of traffic offences continues to rise, with a record number of deaths on Goan roads every month. This indicates that the department has failed to make Goan roads safe for driving, despite collecting huge fines that have failed to deter motorists and make any difference. Blame it on bad roads, lack of warning signs and signboards, badly constructed and poorly maintained speed-breakers, and rumblers that only serve to damage vehicles, but the fact remains that the authorities have failed miserably to make Goan roads safe on several counts.
