Road Safety Week, currently being observed in Goa from October 6 to 12 by the RTO, is yet another eyewash and a wasted exercise. Nothing positive has emerged from this annual event, as recent reports point out an alarming 300 road fatalities on Goa’s roads year after year.
Apparently, we have failed to address the root causes of these accidents, namely, over-speeding and drunk driving, which have been proven to be the primary reasons behind them.
However, there is another aspect to this complex problem that appears to be overlooked”the deplorable condition of Goa’s roads, along with faulty speed breakers and rumbler strips. These issues have contributed to the fatalities and misery of motorists and two-wheelers. It is therefore imperative for the RTO and PWD to work in tandem. Until then, the problem of road accidents will continue to haunt us on Goa’s roads. It is another matter if motorists choose to ignore the instructions and flout safety rules at the cost of their lives.
