It is learnt that the state government will disburse a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each to the kin of those who lost their lives in road accident. The government has reportedly taken a decision to clear all the claims of the families of road accident victims and the file has been sent to the finance department for approval.
The question that arises is whether the life of an accident-victim is worth only Rs 2 lakh. As if to add salt to injury, the government has said that the money will provide monetary relief for many families who have lost their only bread-winner. Would the accident victim who was the only bread-winner in the family have earned only Rs 2 lakh during his entire lifetime? This seems absurd. Added to this is the delay in disbursing the compensation.
If the accident victim comes from a poor family, the near and dear ones may not have sufficient money to perform even the last rites. There could be many families who would not even file any claim for the compensation given the hassles they will have to undergo. In case the accident victim was the only bread-winner in the family there needs to be a government policy in place wherein a family member of the unfortunate victim is provided with a government instead of disbursing just Rs. 2 lakh.
