The role of this force is for smooth flow of traffic. Every Tom, Dick and Harry is stopped for a fishing inquiry. If the required document is produced on demand then there is harassment by demanding further documents to corner the motorists somehow.
Visible offences are like not wearing helmets, over-speeding, banned tinted glasses, speaking on mobile while driving, no entry, overloading, not observing zebra crossings, jumping traffic lights, no uniforms etc. This harassment stops smooth flow of traffic causing avoidable delays
There is a rumour that a quota of collection by fines is traffic cop's target for the day.
One wonders the necessity of checking at the back of the public transport? There is popular feeling that Govt through traffic police is enhancing revenue. On Saturday, at Navelim two sets of traffic police were stationed at a short distance from each other. Besides there is no denying the fact that huge fines are attractive for bribes and that is the plausible reason for strict and rigorous checking. It cannot be presumed that all motorists are not law abiding citizens, that traffic police should routinely stop every second vehicle on mere assumption of suspicion.
