The self-styled auto mechanics, wearing boiler suits, carry out their trade on the service road adjacent to the Manila and Nutan High School. After completing their day’s work, they indiscriminately burn cotton waste laced with used engine oil and plastic materials.
This hazardous waste, when burned, releases toxic fumes into the atmosphere. These fumes are unwittingly inhaled by the residents of adjoining housing societies, potentially causing respiratory issues among the young and elderly.
The Chief Officer of the Margao Municipal Council would do well to instruct the Sanitary Inspector to conduct rounds to check this malpractice and educate the mechanics about good practices in the interest of the environment.
