Action against traffic violators needed not talk of checking

After the news of the Zuari mishap, the Director General of Police has stated that he has instructed his men to conduct checks on drunken driving and over speeding on certain bridge stretches. Well, check means to issue heavy fines (challan) for those who violate the MV Act.

For example, I drive with my old model Bajaj Chetak scooter to Mapusa and sometimes Panaji. On some occasions I have seen the traffic police on duty at strategic locations with challan book in their hand -- when they see 2 and 4 wheelers in violation of traffic rules they stop them for check. When these violations are found they should instantly issue challan. But the violator then calls his politician friend or police and gives the cell phone to the traffic police and goes scott-free. After using of such influence, how can the accident ratio be reduced? This talk of checks on drunken driving is a routine noise by the powers that be and concerned authority when such incidents happen in the State.
