The Bombay High Court at Goa from its very inception in Goa in October 1982 always consisted of a distinguished Catholic Judge till the last one appointed in Goa who retired in August 2017.
However, this legal tradition of appointing a Catholic Judge in the entire High Court of Bombay seems to be discontinued for the last many years. The recently retired CJI had mentioned that there must be diversity in judiciary by giving fair representation to all sections of the society.
When the country at present is also facing aggressive Hindutva majoritism, there is a fear lurking in the minds of the Catholic minorities in Goa from the various incidents like the demolition of Church in Delhi as well as the death of an 84-year old Catholic Priest Fr Stan Swamy prior to his trial commencing.
As our nation consists of diverse religions, it is most essential that there must be a Catholic judge appointed to the High Court of Bombay at Goa to ensure diversity in judiciary because justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done.
