Vehicles, both four-wheeler and two-wheeler are provided with high-beam and low-beam headlights to be used as per necessity. High-beam lights should be used at night, whenever one is unable to see enough of the road ahead to drive safely due to poor street lighting or when one is driving on an unfamiliar road. In rural areas, high beams also help one avoid hitting animals, bicyclists, or pedestrians. Using high-beam lights in the rain can make the vision even worse. However one needs to switch to low beams when there is an oncoming vehicle. High beam light lets one see about 350-500 feet ahead but can also blind oncoming drivers. A rule of thumb is to dim the lights when an oncoming vehicle is in a 200 meters range, to ensure a safe gap. It is everyone's responsibility to drive safely. It may not be possible for the traffic cops to keep a check on vehicles driving with high-beam lights when not necessary. Hence it would be advisable for drivers to follow driving ethics and show courtesy on the roads.
