Iranian film ‘Taxi’ to be screened on Aug 11

PANAJICinephile Film Club will be screening the Iranian film ‘Taxi’ directed by filmmaker Jafar Panahi at Maquinez Palace, Old GMC complex on August 11 at 6.30 pm. The film won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival in 2015, along with a handful of prestigious awards around the world, including the Audience Award at the Mumbai International Film Festival. This 1 hour 22 minute Persian film is with English subtitles. The director Jafar Panahi has been prohibited from making films since 2010 and was in the news recently. Taxi is a masterpiece and a unique piece of work where the director poses as a taxi driver and picks up passengers from different backgrounds, played mostly by non-professional actors, and has conversations with them. Inspired by Abbas Kiarostami's Taste of Cherry (1997) and Ten (2002), it is entirely filmed from a camera on the dashboard. Darren Aronofsky, the jury president at the Berlin festival called the film a love letter to cinema, filled with love for his art, his community, his country and his audience.
