After a long time, we have a sports minister -- Govind Gaude -- who is on a mission to put the sports department in order. He has been visiting many sports facilities and to his shock found no maintenance and upkeep of the government-run sports facilities. The minister saw that some infrastructure like grounds and stadiums are in a pathetic condition and need urgent repairs. He has asked the authorities to send their requirements in writing so that he could allot the required funds to put in order the infrastructure. I don’t think that there was any minister previously who inspected various gymnasiums, grounds in villages, stadiums, swimming pools and taken up the issue of maintenance which was the need of the hour. Govind’s mission of improving the sports infrastructure in Goa will benefit Goan youth and talented sportsmen and sportswomen.
It is not the minister alone who can do wonders, but the coaches and physical education teachers should work in tandem and put in hard work on the field by motivating the students at the school and higher secondary level.
We have good coaches and PE teachers in Goa but what is lacking is the attitude and the will to put in more hours on the field to spot the talent. The Sports Minister should look into the matter and also give incentives to the coaches so that they put in hard work and work with passion.
