Indian leaders are boasting of our largest democracy and comparing with liberal democracies of the world. Where in the world do we witness poaching and defections when parties lose by popular mandate. Thee rule is either coalition or fresh elections. Is it not an attempt to subvert democracy by unfair means by legal twist to anti-defection law? Already the brute majority is showing. The Parliament and Assemblies are curtailed to ward off critical debates. The opposition is muted by ED, CBI and other arms which Govt indirectly influences. Any dissent. objections. criticism is met with suppression including arrests and jail.
Enticing and luring with incentives including positions is downright mean approach. The attempt to capture states and destroy opposition not a healthy precedent to nuture democratic label.
All energies of Govt in power is obsession to win at all costs and get rid of opposition totally.
This was not the dream of constitution framers who foresaw a healthy balance between opposition and treasury benches to checkmate abuse and monopoly of power. Indian democracy is on the slippery road of a new brand of authoritarian democracy. With brute majority in Parliament, Rajya Sabha and govt in majority of the states, fundamental changes and rewriting of Constitution appears to be the hidden agenda.
