The spaces beneath flyovers are often overlooked, treated as little more than empty patches of land. In many places across Goa, these neglected areas have gradually turned into garbage dumping sites, creating an eyesore in developing urban landscapes. Yet, these very spaces hold immense potential if utilized creatively. The reported initiative by Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Vijay to convert the vacant spaces beneath flyovers into landscaped parks, murals, illuminated public areas, gyms, children's play zones and seating spaces is indeed thinking out-of-the-box. Goa, too, has witnessed the construction of several flyovers in recent years as part of its infrastructure development In several locations, they have become convenient spots for indiscriminate garbage dumping. The Goa government should consider adopting a similar model by converting these vacant spaces into well-maintained public amenities. Such spaces would provide residents with much-needed recreational facilities, particularly in densely populated urban areas where open spaces are limited. Proper barricading would also serve an important safety measure by preventing pedestrians, especially children, from inadvertently entering busy traffic lanes adjacent to the flyovers. Adequate lighting would further ensure that these areas remain safe.
