The shocking incident of the brutal murder of a young jeweller in Margao has once again brought to the fore the importance of CCTVs. These CCTVs play an important role in solving crimes and also acts as a deterrence to anti-social elements. CCTV footage is also important in finding out who is in the wrong when an accident takes place. It also helps the local authorities in preventing encroachment on the pavements by vendors.
CCTV cameras have been installed in various cities in the state. However most of them are defunct and are present as mere show-pieces. Having CCTVs which are not functioning is as good as not having any of them. Maintenance is of vital importance. There is no point in spending crores of rupees of public funds in installing CCTVs if they are not put to good use.
The importance of CCTV can never be underestimated. Hence these cameras need to be installed at strategic locations in every city and even in the villages. It would also be desirable to install CCTV cameras with night vision since much of the crime is committed under the cover of darkness.
