This is with reference to the report, "6 Wells , natural spring contaminated with petrol…….- The Goan Everyday - November 28, 2023". That was certainly a very disturbing piece of news - six bore wells & a natural spring at Matvem-Dabolim, a source of life-giving water being contaminated by petrol. What could be worse? Apparently, there is a leak in the underground pipeline. Needless to say, the authorities must act swiftly in order to avoid a bigger disaster for the surrounding region as well. This brings us to the issue of maintenance. Regular inspection of such infrastructure could perhaps have saved the people this situation. Contamination of water is of course nothing new as in Mumbai, several parts of the city receive muddy, smelly drinking water. In cases of infrastructure collapsing too, regular inspection and necessary repairs could prevent any possible disasters.
It is important that authorities all across the country take urgent steps to prevent contamination and destruction of water bodies. It is believed that the next World War would be fought on the issue of water.
