It is learnt that a man from Candolim was reportedly cheated to the tune of over Rs 5 lakh under the garb of sending costly gifts. The cyber crime police station Ribandar has registered an FIR in connection with the case. According to the police, the gift scam is one of the most common online frauds in which fraudsters befriend people on social media and later trick them into transferring lakhs of rupees under the guise of sending costly gifts. What comes as a surprise is that people still fall prey to these cyber criminals despite being warned time and again about these tactics. From hacking into computers to making fraudulent transactions online, there are many ways in which one can become a victim of illegal cyber activities. In Goa a state-of-the-art, cyber forensic laboratory of the Goa police was made operational at the cyber crime police station, Ribandar. The laboratory is fully equipped with licensed digital forensic software which can assist in providing the forensic expertise to any mobile or computer hard-disc. However the general public need to be vigilant about cyber criminals.
