The Sao Joao Festival is an annual Christian feast that is celebrated on June 24 every year. But due to the Sacred Heart of Jesus feast on June 24 Friday, this year Sao Joao feast will be celebrated on June 23 on Thursday. Christian scripture tells us of John the Baptist leaping for joy in his mother Elizabeth’s womb when she was told of Jesus’ birth.
Sao Joao festival in Goa State is celebrated with lots of fun and joy and young and old wearing crowns made of fresh flowers, leaves and fruits called 'kopels'. Newly married brides serve different types of cut fruit to all people in the ward. There are many traditional Goan dishes which include sorpotel and sannas, pulao and 'patoleo' among other foods and plenty of Goan cashew and coconut feni to go around. People sing and dance to the beat of 'ghumot' and 'kansrallem'. Sao Joao festival is full of fun but be careful. Take care while jumping in the well and don't drink and drive.
