It may be recalled that recently an incident of a well found contaminated with petroleum products and seepage in nullah was reported at Matvem, Dabolim. It is understood that the pipeline was found to be corroded which according to preliminary investigation was the cause for the leakage. Now several agitated residents of Mangor-Vasco on Saturday came on the road in protest after alleging that the drinking water has been contaminated with sewage. Several local residents reportedly complained of ill health, vomiting and diarrhoea due to water contamination. The residents claimed that the water pipeline passes through gutters carrying sewage and there is every possibility of contamination of the drinking water. Foul smell has been emanating from the water flowing through the pipeline. It is learnt that a project of building a new gutter has been sanctioned. However nothing has been done to replace the water pipeline which is more than 25 years old. Ideally building a new gutter and shifting the water pipeline and replacing it with a new one should have been carried out simultaneously. Urgent remedial steps need to be taken by the authorities in order to prevent an epidemic in the area.
