After India gained independence in 1947, on January 15, 1949, the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army, KM Cariappa, took charge of the Indian Army from the British Commander-in-Chief Francis Butcher. He led the army on the western border in the war with Pakistan in 1947. On Army Day, January 15, army drills are held at the army headquarters and army headquarters in New Delhi. Army medals and awards are given on this day to pay homage to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the defence of the nation. In the year 1776, the British East India Company established the Indian Army in Calcutta under the government. The Indian Naval Academy is located at Ezhimala in Kerala. It is the largest naval academy in Asia. The Indian Army has a cavalry regiment. There are only three such regiments in the world. Indian army has 53 camps and 9 army bases. After independence, India had to face many wars. After independence, the first army had to take action in Kashmir. After that there was war with China in 1962 and war with Pakistan in 1965 and 1971. In the 1971 war, East Pakistan, a region of Pakistan became independent as Bangladesh. In this war, the Indian army performed a great feat. Pakistan's 93,000 troops, including General Niazi, had to surrender, making it the largest surrender by an army since World War II. After this Kargil war took place with Pakistan in 1999.
