After a case of police brutality was exposed in Kundai in January 2023, Goan Varta revealed a nexus between the police and a thief. MLA Venzy Viegas brought up the irregularities of police constables in the Goa Assembly, seeking their dismissal instead of suspension, a common practice that leads to reinstatement. At the end of January 2024, Viraj Mashelkar, a fast-food owner, was brutally assaulted by Sameer Phadte at Marcel over a trivial issue, captured on CCTV.
The distressing footage showed six individuals, including the accused Head Constable, restraining Viraj and repeatedly punching him. Sameer Phadte had a history of such violence, having previously allegedly assaulted an Assistant Sub-Inspector from his own police station. Such repeated violence against innocent people and small Goan businessmen demands harsh punishment for assaulting Viraj Mashelkar, tarnishing the image of the police.
His suffering reported to the PMO office and the President of India, must not be ignored. Despite pressure to withdraw, Mashelkar registered the complaint, a step in the right direction that should serve as a deterrent to others. Harsh treatment is warranted for those guilty of misconduct and unethical behavior, with dismissal from service for life-threatening injuries caused by police actions.
