The best floats will vie for prizes in different categories set by the Arts and Culture/Information Ministry. However, recent directives limit old-style Khell tiatres performances to crowds of only 50, a disappointment for many eagerly awaiting the chance to showcase their talents. Despite this setback, enthusiastic crowds in various costumes will partake in the festivities, fueled by a decree from King Momo suspending normal laws for three days.
While commercialism threatens to overshadow traditional floats, the enduring spirit of old traditions persists, cherished for their originality and cost-effective appeal. Music lovers will enjoy brass bands and captivating tunes, while LED lights and high-decibel sounds add to the vibrant atmosphere. Carnival, rooted in the Portuguese colonial era, precedes the Christian Lenten period, commemorating Christ’s death and resurrection.
