Carnival 2024 brings colour and tradition back to Goa’s streets

This year’s Carnival 2024 sees a resurgence of enthusiasm after the subdued years of the COVID-19 pandemic. Colorful and captivating designer floats will grace the streets, showcasing Goa’s essence and lifestyle. The best floats will vie for prizes in different categories set by the Arts and Culture/Information Ministry. The upcoming three-day fiesta promises fun and entertainment, embodying the true spirit of revelry that Carnival represents.

However, recent directives limit old-style Khell tiatres performances to crowds of only 50, a disappointment for many eagerly awaiting the chance to showcase their talents. Despite this setback, enthusiastic crowds in various costumes will partake in the festivities, fueled by a decree from King Momo suspending normal laws for three days.

While commercialism threatens to overshadow traditional floats, the enduring spirit of old traditions persists, cherished for their originality and cost-effective appeal. Music lovers will enjoy brass bands and captivating tunes, while LED lights and high-decibel sounds add to the vibrant atmosphere. Carnival, rooted in the Portuguese colonial era, precedes the Christian Lenten period, commemorating Christ’s death and resurrection. Though festivities vary worldwide, Carnival’s essence remains”a celebration of life, music, and community. May Carnival continue to ignite hearts with joy and capture its timeless spirit. Viva Carnaval!
