Authorities must spot warning signs before major landslide

A major landslide was reported along the newly constructed four-lane Varunapuri to Harbour connectivity road on Saturday morning. According to locals a minor landslide had occurred in the same area about a month ago which has now escalated into a major landslide. If timely action was taken by way of building retaining walls such a disaster could have been avoided. It is pertinent to note that at several places along the road from Varunapuri junction to Sada there are road-signs warning drivers and pedestrians of the dangers of falling rocks. It must be said small rocks tumbling and minor incidents of mud sliding from the side of the hill are a warning sign that a major landslide is in the offing. The authorities should take necessary measures like building a retaining wall to prevent a major catastrophe.  Several areas along the road atop the hill leading to Mormugao Harbour from Vasco have become susceptible to landslides. Being very close to the main road, a landslide can endanger the lives of pedestrians and road users besides those living in the houses on the hill.
