In reference to ‘Traffic dept insists on ‘enforcement’ rather than awareness’ ( The Goan Everyday December 16, 2022 ).
Traffic violations are a cause for concerns for every stakeholder. Sometimes these violations turn either ugly or deadly or both. The Traffic Department has its task cut out ahead of Christmas and New Year’s celebrations.
The decision to enforce the discipline can yield short term gains. If the department is serious about bringing traffic violations under control, it must run a campaign that serves a dual purpose of creating awareness and tugging at heartstrings.
Funny one-liners like, “Speed is temporary. Life is permanent”, “Guns and roses. Acceleration and brakes”, “Dangerous curves take lives. Brakes save lives” and so on displayed across prominent junctions and accident prone areas can go a long way in creating awareness. Better still, Goa’s famous celebrities can come together and volunteer to do short clips of upto 50 seconds extolling the virtues of driving with consciousness with a view to reaching destinations and spreading cheers.
