Ban rent-a-car services?

An innocent young man heading to Panaji for work was flung into the Mandovi River on Thursday evening when his two-wheeler was struck by a speeding rent-a-car, driven by an irresponsible tourist attempting to overtake another vehicle on the old Mandovi bridge.

With increasing fatal accidents like this, the government must urgently consider banning the rent-a-car services in the State, particularly as it’s often inexperienced tourists causing such incidents during sightseeing trips. These reckless behaviours are not only a nuisance but also claim innocent lives. Today, locals also partake in dangerous activities like racing, drunken driving, and speeding, ignoring speed limits, especially on bridges. Unfortunately, traffic police seem inactive, focusing solely on minor infractions instead of enforcing safety measures effectively. To truly save lives, the government should deploy traffic personnel round the clock on bridges, using modern cameras to monitor and penalize reckless driving.
