According to an African proverb, “When the elephants fight, the grass gets trampled”. In other words when those in power are at loggerheads, it is the people who have to suffer. This appears to be the case at the Margao Municipal Council (MMC). The incident of leachate leaking from garbage trucks at Sonsodo causing several two-wheeler riders to skid on the slippery road and injure themselves, has reportedly exposed the internal differences between the chairperson and the chief officer of the council. It is learnt that the chairperson has held the chief officer responsible for the mishap at Sonsodo. The chairperson has reportedly issued a bizarre threat of locking the office of the chief officer and asking the CO to work from his cabin. On the other hand a councillor of the ruling panel has reportedly demanded the resignation of the chairperson. In another development while the chief officer has assured stringent action against those found responsible, the Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco has reportedly warned the Margao civic body that trucks carrying garbage will face blockades if the issues are not addressed. All this internal bickering between the authorities and differences with those in power does not augur well for resolving the Sonsodo issue.
