This letter is with reference to the report, "12 illegal structures in Siolim get GCZMA notice for CRZ violation - The Goan Everyday, April 23, 2022." It is distressing to note the blatant violation of CRZ regulations, not just in Goa but in several other cities/states in the country. Inspite of so much of awareness being created with regard to the environment, the need to save the ecosystem, to save our planet, we are witnessing such destructive deeds. CRZ demarcations have been made after detailed study of the region and obviously it is for the protection of the region. Over the years however, coastal regulation rules seem to have been relaxed in several places, inspite of knowing the dangers/risks involved.
On the other hand, should one wonder what the authorities were doing while such illegal structures were coming up on the banks of the Chapora river? Or for that matter, other such illegal/unauthorised constructions all over the country? The current demolition drive in Delhi with the use of bulldozers, is in the centre of a storm. Should not the bulldozers be used on those responsible for turning a blind eye while such constructions were in progress? We are wasting our time and efforts in procedures/litigation after the constructions are complete. What is required is prompt and timely action.
