Organised by the Rising Club of Sanvorcotto, the 13th edition of the Free Summer Tiatr Festival began with pomp and show at Cuncolim. The nine-day festival is organised in association with the Department of Art and Culture as well as the Tiatr Academy of Goa in memory of the late Max Tavares.
Thanking the people of Cuncolim who attended the opening ceremony in large numbers, Sammy Tavares stated that the festival saw a pause for two years due to the pandemic, but gained the support of youth when it was announced this year. “The festival that’s being organised every year for the past couple of years is incomplete without the presence of the Parish Priest of Our Lady of Health Church and the local social worker, Dr Mohan Kurade,” stated Tavares, who also thanked Effie and Mario Menezes, vice president of Tiatr Academy for supporting the tiatr festival wholeheartedly.
Blessing the festival, Fr Jude Coelho, parish priest of Our Lady of Health Church, Cuncolim lauded the efforts of the Rising Club of Sanvorcotto for promoting the mother tongue Konkani. “The festival also supports those whose livelihood depends upon the tiatr, and it gives an opportunity for the public to enjoy and entertain the tiatr shows free of cost,” said Fr Coelho.
Dr Mohan Kurade who was felicitated at the ceremony remembered Max Tavares and his contribution to the tiatr. “The tiatr festival organised every year in fond memory of Max is one of the best projects that’s being undertaken by the Rising Club of Sanvorcotto.
