Centre must repeal laws and save our farmers

It is both unfortunate and a shame that we, who are privileged to live in the world’s largest democracy, are currently witnessing one of the country’s largest non-violent and peaceful protests in recent times, by farmers for the past 10-12 days without a solution to their grievances.

The protests have now snowballed into a major issue with a call given by the farmers’ union for a nationwide ‘bandh’ on December 8.

Agriculture is the most important sector of the Indian economy. Yet it was sad to witness the shoddy treatment meted out to the protesting farmers who had to face the brunt of the police lathis , water cannons and tear-gas during their peaceful march.

Of what use then is the slogan ‘Jai Jawan , Jai Kisan’ if we do not respect their presence, hear their grievances and protect their livelihood?
