Clean Mapusa, not just in slogans

“Keep Mapusa clean” is the slogan of everyone who visits Mapusa, especially the famous Mapusa Friday Market. However, the situation on the ground tells a different story. The new bus stand has been built without proper “Pay Parking” signboards. People travelling along the side road towards the Mapusa fruit yard market are faced with large amounts of garbage, which is not cleared regularly. The authorities, including the Mapusa Municipal Council, appear to be mere spectators.

It is also seen that officials become active only when a cleanliness drive is announced, such as during the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. At that time, the area is cleaned briefly, but the effort is not sustained. Why are the authorities not inspecting the workers appointed for cleaning? Salaries and contracts are paid, but the work remains unsatisfactory. Will the MMC Chairperson, the Health Officer in charge of Mapusa, and the Sanitary Inspector conduct a proper inspection of the new bus stand and the side road to the market at the earliest? Perhaps the Mapusa MLA could also take part in strengthening the cleanliness campaign and ensure that lasting improvements are made.
