Historian Dale Menezes has reportedly submitted a formal objection to the Department of Archives and Archaeology, Goa, regarding its notification declaring a structure in Old Goa as a protected monument under the name “Haat Katro Khambo.”

Menezes contends that there is no historical evidence supporting this name, noting that the structure has traditionally been referred to as “Pelourinho Novo.” He has urged the authorities to reconsider the nomenclature, emphasising the importance of basing official records on documented historical evidence rather than folklore.

The development may lead to differing views, with some people likely to question or disagree with his position. In recent times, there has been a tendency on social media to circulate varying interpretations of historical sites in the State, sometimes based on limited or disputed information, which can lead to misunderstandings. Menezes’ intervention highlights the need for careful research and balanced discussion when dealing with historical heritage in Goa.
