Climate change: The alarm bells are ringing

The news report “Exposure to extreme heat has tripled since 1983 - The Goan Everyday” gives in depth information on the rising heat conditions across the world.

Climate change is for real, and rising temperatures around the world is a reality which we can ignore only at our own peril. Where do we in India, stand?

According to the research mentioned in the report in 2016, the most affected region was Southern Asia where India alone accounted for 37% of the population living in areas with an increasing extreme heat trend.

Isn't it time we wake up to reality? We have been experiencing extreme heat conditions all across the country. We are witnessing unseasonal rains causing havoc in the lives of the people.

Yet on the other hand, we continue with our misadventure of cutting down trees, damaging forests, destroying mangroves, undertaking infrastructure projects causing vast environmental damage and disrupting the lives of people in the vicinity of these projects.

When are we going to take climate change seriously? Are we going to wait until there's nothing left around us? The Alarm bells are ringing, can we hear them?
