Yes sir, lack of ethics, principles in politics is ruining our democracy. Without getting into controversy over what has transpired at the Curchorem-Cacora Municipal Council, one cannot but help noticing this lack of ethics & principles in our country over the past few years. We have witnessed how our elected representatives have been dumping the party from which they have been elected and jumping over to the other side. We have been seeing how elected governments have been toppled by our power hungry, greedy politicians. We have been seeing how our elected representatives have been betraying the trust the voters have placed in them. We have been witnessing this lack of ethics & principles during poll campaigns with personal attacks and character assassination. And, we ask, what is ethics? Some critics argue that ethics has no place in politics.
So, where do we go from here? Is there any scope for instilling ethics & principles in politics, in public office? Where do we learn such social values? According to Judy Sheindlin, an American prosecutor, "You don't teach morals and ethics and empathy and kindness in the schools. You teach that at home and children learn by example". So, 'charity begins at home!' Needless to say, ALL our politicians whichever party they may belong to, need to understand this. Long Live our democracy!
