Easter is celebrated by Christians as a joyous day in commemoration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Easter in Goa also heralds the unofficial commencement of the tiatr season.
Though there have been tiatrs during the Lenten season as also competitions like the inter-collegiate tiatr competition, several seasoned tiatr directors have set Easter Sunday, which is on April 17, as the date for the release of their new production.
Tiatr which is unique in nature has been a source of income for hundreds of artistes in Goa for several decades. The 130-year-old tiatr industry had to suffer for nearly two years in the wake of a total shutdown due to the pandemic.
It is understood that in the last one and half-year most of the tiatrists have spent whatever savings they had. Many of them had to resort to various other means of earning their daily bread.
However the new season this year from Easter Sunday brings back hope. The pandemic is on the wane and hopefully all those associated with the industry will cover up the loss they suffered.
