Democracy requires rule of law. The Constitution gives equal importance to the executive and judiciary, but wisely keeps the judiciary as guardian of the Constitution! It is reported that State Legislative Assembly speaker Ramesh Tawadkar says his is a constitutional post and hence the High Court cannot issue any directions to him however long he may take to sit on the disqualification petition of defection of eight congress MLAs who have defected in September 2022.
They continue as members of the ruling party legislative assembly defeating the purpose of the anti-defection law thus making a mockery of the electorate and democracy!
This is also happening at the national-level where the strong executive is trying to overpower the judiciary to reject some judges chosen by the Collegium and appoint their own selection like they have done for Governors and all other constitutional posts like President, Vice President, Speakers etc!
Democracy is in jeopardy all over the world. The shameful Ukrainian war where millions of families and children are displaced, beautiful cities razed to rubble, death and destruction continues where democratic nations together with other powerful nations are overpowering humanity and more interested in arms race and superiority than putting an end to war!
