Food Bank: A good initiative

It is learnt that the Food Bank, Sangolda, has installed three food fridges at the police stations of Margao, Fatorda and Colva as part of the initiative to collect extra good food. The food that is stored in the food fridges will be picked up by a vehicle and distributed among the poor people. This is a novel initiative and needs to be implemented in the other police stations as well. Many poor cannot afford a square meal a day while still others go to bed on an empty stomach. On the flip side, a lot of food gets wasted at parties, wedding receptions, family functions, in hotels and even in the homes. All this extra food that is cooked needs to be sent to the Food Bank in the locality which will then be distributed among the poor and the needy. The basic idea is that food should not get wasted and that no poor person should go to bed on an empty stomach. At the end of a party or a wedding reception, food caterers could end up with extra food that has not been served. This food needs to be sent to the Food Bank. The local police could in turn help in the distribution of this food among the poor and hungry people in the locality. Helping the poor pleases the Almighty God. The Bible says “God upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry” (Psalm 146, 7).
