From this news report ‘Goans celebrate V-day in Melbourne’ it seems like the goans settled in Melbourne have had a good time celebrating Valentine’s Day. And I suppose many of those settled in other western countries may surely be having a wonderful time celebrating such events. Moreover, they may feeling proud of their Goan culture and are trying to keep that culture alive in these countries. All very well.
However, I wonder if they give a thought to what is happening back home, in their homeland, Goa. The situation on several fronts is definitely not too good. The people of Goa seem to be in a disturbed state with agitations against Infrastructure projects affecting the environment. There are several other issues affecting the people. The political scene is too disturbing. There is a sort of gloom in this tiny state.
While those settled in western countries celebrate, their home state is deteriorating. They may have to one day, forget their roots altogether in the years to come and there could be nothing to celebrate thereafter. And the sad part is, the migration to western countries continues, not just from Goa but also from cities like Mumbai as well. The grass seems to be greener on the other side!
