“We are studying the matter” basically sums up the response by Goa Chief Minister to the serious spurt in traffic accidents and related casualties (including deaths) on Goan roads in the recent past.
Any holistic planning of the roads network should have taken into account, the various aspects of road development including the safety considerations. Yes, reckless drivers are also responsible but this can’t be an excuse for the the Goa government. I have witnessed in foreign countries, reckless drivers being countered by continuously introduced stringent government legislations, traffic police checks and stiff fines to deter road accidents; which have proven successful. Not to mention highly improved safety standards on the roads like proper visible signs, good lighting, speed breakers, numerous speed monitor cameras, etc What is stopping the Goa Govt to follow similar measures? In any progressive society, the Transport minister would be relieved of his duties should there be high casualties … here the minister seems to be least bothered about this serious problem and seems to too busy marketing himself.
