Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine has yet to overthrow the government in Kyiv even as thousands of people are believed to have been killed or injured.
The Prosecutor of International Criminal Court has said that they would collect evidence for any past and present allegations of war crimes, crimes against humanity or genocide committed on any part of the territory of Ukraine by any person.
The ICC, however, can only prosecute crimes committed on the territory of its 123 member states. Ukraine is not a member, but in 2014 accepted the ICC jurisdiction. Russia is not a member of ICC and has rejected its jurisdiction.
These are terrifying times for the people of Ukraine and horrifying for the rest of the continent. Russia is breaching international law and the UN charter by invading Ukraine.
This crisis is a serious threat to the rules-based international order, with ramifications well beyond Europe. There is no justification for changing internationally recognized borders by force.
This has fundamentally changed the Euro-Atlantic security situation. President Putin has re-introduced war to the European continent. He has put himself on the wrong side of history.
KARNATAKA HIJAB ROW: The hijab has become the subject of a fierce debate in India. It all began last month when six teenagers at a government-run college in Karnataka's Udupi district began protesting after they were barred from classes for wearing headscarves.
The issue turned divisive with Hindu students turning up in colleges wearing saffron shawls. Since the ‘hijab’ issue has become controversial there seems to be jostling among some political parties who are trying to project themselves as protectors of minorities.
This controversy shows that the secular state and its principles give enormous opportunities to create new problems. It's utterly unfortunate that the schools that should discuss and debate about the level education, have a become a laboratory for communalism.
It's cautioned that the students should not fall prey to vested interests political plots. Their job is to concentrate on their studies and strategise their future.
