As of February 8, the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj continues to witness an unprecedented influx of devotees. The Uttar Pradesh government reports that over 40 crore (400 million) pilgrims have taken the holy dip at the Sangam ” the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers ” with numbers expected to exceed 50 crore by the festival's conclusion on February 26. On February 5, Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the sacred rituals, taking a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam.
The Maha Kumbh Mela remains a significant spiritual event, drawing millions seeking purification and blessings. The festival features grand processions, including the participation of Naga Sadhus, ash-smeared holy men armed with symbolic weapons, who lead the Shahi Snan (royal bathing) rituals. The initiation of new Naga Sadhus also takes place during this time, involving rituals that signify their renunciation of worldly life. The influx of pilgrims has also provided a significant boost to local businesses, with vendors and service providers experiencing increased demand.
