It seems like the residents of Mapusa are facing a mammoth task with cleaning up the river infested by the hyacinth weeds. The locals have come together in order to save the damage the weeds are causing to the flora & fauna in the area.
One thing that could not be missed in the news report is the inaction of the government, the indifference and lack of urgency in tackling the situation.
However, this is not surprising as this is the case with other States as well. One cannot but help cite the case of the Mithi river in Mumbai which was the epicentre of the deluge of 2005 and continues to be a cause for concern.
In the meanwhile, the situation at the Mapusa river seems to be getting serious with the authorities yet to come out with some concrete plans.
It is imperative that we take such issues seriously and tackle them with urgency. Time is ticking, let's not play games with Nature. Nature can play far more dangerous games than we can handle!
