Day by day, the number of beggars in Margao city is increasing, especially near the KTC bus terminal, Margao municipality and the old station road. Begging is becoming a professional business for the migrants who pour into Goa in trains coming in at Margao railways station. Some of these beggars are seen drinking and eating in good restaurants. Near the Apollo Victor Hospital in Margao, one can see beggars creating a nuisance daily. They drink alcohol and fight among themselves. The situation may go out of control if the municipality, the police and other authorities concerned do not take steps to curb the begging menace. Some of these beggars are habitual offenders and indulge in criminal activities. This means our citizens are not safe on the roads. These beggars sleep on garden benches meant for citizens, thus denying them their right to recreation. Sometimes, it appears the police are in league with these beggars because the menace continues unabated.
