Goans have made a significant mark by not only showing their love for football as their favourite sport but also by having some players represent top clubs in Goa and other states, helping to put Goa on the map. The late Mark Mascarenhas from Sarzora is remembered by the Sarzora Sports Club, which hosted a memorial football tournament on 30th October 2024 in his honour. The event was graced by the esteemed Padma Shri and Arjuna Awardee Brahmanand Sankhwalker, who captained Goa and India, and served as the chief guest.
The podium at Chinchinim Church Ground was filled with great footballers from top Indian clubs, along with MLAs, politicians, business leaders, and many wonderful people. This gathering not only boosted the morale of the organisers and Mark’s family but also lifted the spirits of the spectators and the finalists. The tournament was moved from Sarzora to Chinchinim for a good reason, making it special as Mark was a student of Mount Mary’s High School and likely began his football career on that very ground. In 1980, Mark started a series of remarkable achievements with the champion Junior Goa team. As he developed, he played for Salcete FC and Salgaocar SC, and later joined the WIFA and the Central Railway team in Mumbai in 1985. Mark was one of the most skilled goalkeepers in the history of Goa and Indian football, and he will always be remembered as the ‘Great Wall of China,’ making it difficult for the ball to pass through the goalpost.
From my own experience as a goalkeeper in school and college, I know that it’s important to organise the players in front of you and motivate them. You need to be aware of what’s happening on the pitch and react quickly to threats, much like a good manager. Therefore, Mark Mascarenhas will be remembered not only as a top goalkeeper but also as a great Superintendent with Central Railway and a cherished teammate.
