Amidst the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan and the on again, off again ceasefire, the IMF has approved a loan of $ 2.5 billion to Pakistan despite strong objections from India which chose to abstain from the voting process. There are many who are of the opinion that India should have voted negative instead of abstaining but as per extant international laws, IMF approves loans based on consensus and "No" is not an option. What is more important to note is that the majority of the Director Members of IMF, including US, Japan and China have voted in favour of disbursing the loan. One might wonder what happened to the tag of Vishwaguru and the "The world consults Modi before taking any decision" bit. Jokes apart, a stronger focus on nurturing amiable international relationships based on astute diplomacy and mutual benefit rather than meaningless muscle flexing is the need of the hour. Hope our head honchos realise this soonest.
