The Goa Government failed to provide food packets, water bottles and mobile toilet facilities to the police staff posted on duty during the four-day session of the Goa Legislative Assembly held last week. Despite repeated directions by the Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC) that the police personnel were human beings and should be so treated, the authorities have failed to comply with the directives despite the Chief Secretary having given a written undertaking to that effect.
The GHRC in its order had expressed the hope that the authorities would take this issue seriously and provide basic amenities to the police personnel on Assembly duty. The GHRC had also observed that not providing meals, drinking water and toilet facilities to the police personnel posted during the Assembly Sessions was a clear infringement of Article 21 of the Constitution and also amounted to violation of human rights. Such an inhumane treatment being meted out is a serious and gross violation of human rights of the police staff and the government needs to be held accountable for this high-handed conduct.
