Public servants must have integrity and talent

During a discussion on a Calling Attention Motion on 18 July, MLAs revealed that the Administrator of Communidades of the South Zone is often absent and inebriated, leading to calls for his suspension. MLA Vijai Sardesai also accused the Director of Tourism of charging a 5 percent commission.  

These issues highlight the poor state of administration in Goa and the Chief Minister’s loss of control. As head of administration, the Chief Minister must address this incompetence. I personally witnessed the current Administrator’s inebriation during his tenure as Deputy Collector of Ponda. His staff confirmed this behaviour in his previous posting as well. In a small state like Goa, such incidents are known to the Chief Minister. Despite this, the officer continues to hold public posts. The Revenue Minister and the Chief Minister must answer for this. If they are serious about clean governance, they must remove corrupt officials from their positions.

The news report ‘Minister Backs Goa Miles, Slams Traditional Taxis’ (TGE, July 19) is a serious matter that cannot be glossed over easily by the Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho, considering that the Goa government has lost 5 crores in the past 5 years due to the failure of private taxi operators to pay taxes, and the government is already in the red with a fiscal deficit of a whopping 27,000 crores plus.
