It must be said that in Goa the authorities concerned wake up and repair the roads only when a major accident takes place. An unfortunate incident took place in a head-on collision between a car and an LPG gas-carrying truck on a sharp bend at Karmal Ghat, as the car plunged into the valley and a youth in the car died on the spot.
Steep slopes and sharp and narrow bends besides unattended crash barriers have made the Karmal Ghat section along the NH-66 an accident-prone zone.
This poses a serious threat to motorists as a slight error in manoeuvring can take them hurtling down the valley. For the last six to eight months, the crash barriers are reportedly lying unrepaired.
From time to time the voice is being raised against this. It seems that the authorities concerned have now taken note of the same and are carrying out the necessary repair works. The authorities need to be proactive in preventing road accidents by carrying out necessary repair work in time and not wait till an accident takes place to act.
