The State government has given the green light for the Margao Municipal Council to transport an additional 30 tonnes of Sonsoddo waste to the Saligao garbage treatment plant. This is despite the fact that the plant is already working beyond its designed capacity.
The government has been accused of trying to turn Saligao into a permanent garbage dumping ground. They have been asked to set up their own mini-garbage treatment plants in all the villages instead of transporting garbage from all over Goa to Saligao.
The Saligao Solid Waste Management Plant was set up by the late Manohar Parrikar led BJP government in 2013. It was promised that the plant would only treat garbage from Saligao and the surrounding coastal areas. However, trucks from across North Goa have been allowed to bring their garbage to the plant.
The plant has caused a number of problems for the villagers of Saligao. It emits foul smell and has contaminated the groundwater. The villagers of Saligao should come together to stop the government from sending garbage from across the state to the Saligao plant.
