There was a time in the past when Calangute was known as the “Queen of Beaches”. It was frequented by hippies in the sixties and seventies. The then-famous ‘Beat Contests’ held at the beach would attract huge crowds from all over Goa. But the once beautiful beach has deteriorated to a very large extent. Tourists coming from other states have made the beautiful beach a place for nefarious activities. It is a fact that local tourists come to Goa to consume liquor and for other forms of entertainment. There are several touts found on the roads. These touts clandestinely take these tourists to dubious places offering them all kinds of shady services. Touts are not tourist guides and have no permission to accompany the tourists. These touts harass both foreign and local tourists and extract money from them. They are found everywhere on the road along the Calangute-Baga stretch and other places along the coastal belt. The police need to crackdown on the touts who bring a bad name to the tourism sector.
