Sonsoddo stench back in Saligao

Sonsoddo is back in the news, once again haunting the residents of Saligao with unbearable stench. This is due to the government’s decision to transport an additional 30 tonnes of untreated wet garbage daily from the Sonsoddo garbage dump in Margao to the Saligao waste treatment plant.

The Goa government has probably not understood the gravity of the situation. The solution does not lie in simply providing additional trucks to transport the wet waste. Instead, they need to put a stop to the additional 30 tonnes of transported waste being sent to the Saligao waste treatment plant, which is already working beyond its designed capacity.

In this context, it is pertinent to mention that Sonsoddo has been in the news for over a decade due to the failure of the Margao Municipal Council and the Goa Waste Management Corporation to treat the waste dumped at the shed. This has resulted in a whopping 10,000 metric tonnes of waste accumulating, with leachate flowing into water bodies, smoke pollution of the environment, and the dangers of fire from generated methane gas. This is a shame and disgrace.
